AMONG THE RUINS

There is something about old ruins that makes us wonder about the people who walked through them before us.

Among the Ruins leaves that story deliberately unfinished.

A solitary woman in black descends a narrow stone path, her long dress trailing behind her while the remains of old architecture dissolve into graphite, paint and warm-ivory space.

We don't know who she is.

We don't know where she is going.

And we certainly don't know why she looks rather more at home among the ruins than perhaps she should.

The figure and landscape move between realism and dissolution. Heavy black painterly passages give weight and movement to the dress, while weathered stone, fragmented architecture and long graphite-inspired lines gradually disappear into untouched paper.

There is something slightly gothic here, perhaps even a little unsettling — but nothing is explained.

No ghosts. No broomsticks. No obvious witchcraft.

Just a woman in black who seems to know the way.
