CLOSE ENOUGH TO HEAR
We like to think that other people's opinions remain outside us.
Something said.
Something heard.
Something we can choose to ignore.
But some voices are allowed much closer.
Close Enough To Hear is about the opinions we carry with us long after the conversation has ended — the judgements, expectations and casual remarks that somehow find a place in our own thoughts.
The tiny figures beside her ears make those voices almost physical. They whisper privately, insistently, close enough to become difficult to separate from her own. What began as somebody else's thought can slowly become something she repeats to herself.
And perhaps that is the unsettling part.
The woman herself appears composed and strong, yet the voices remain. Not because she is weak, but because even the strongest of us can carry other people's words far closer than they deserve to be.
The piece asks a quiet question:
How many of the voices in our heads actually belong to us?
