ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
FIRST HOME
First Home is about a relationship that begins before two people have ever met.
Before a baby knows a room, a favourite toy, the faces waiting for them or even what the outside world looks like, there is already something familiar.
A voice.
The woman in First Home sits quietly with an open book resting across her lap, reading aloud to the child she is carrying. There is no nursery around her and nothing that tries to tell the story of who this baby will become. For now, their entire world is much smaller — the warmth of her body, the rhythm of her breathing, the movement of her hand across her belly and the sound of her voice arriving from somewhere just beyond it.
It is such an ordinary thing to do. And perhaps that is what makes it so moving.
She may be reading a story the baby will hear again after birth. She may simply like the thought that they are listening. Perhaps one day she will hold that same book beside a cot and wonder whether somewhere, somehow, the voice already feels familiar.
The artwork keeps her face outside the composition, allowing the moment to belong to any mother and child rather than becoming a portrait of one particular woman. Her body, the book and the simple gesture of one hand resting over her belly carry the story instead.
Warm ivory fabric moves into graphite-inspired drawing and broad painterly texture, with small passages of muted gold appearing through the chair and surrounding surface. Parts of the figure remain beautifully observed while others dissolve into unfinished marks and open paper, keeping the work intimate rather than overly literal.
First Home is about pregnancy, but perhaps even more than that, it is about the beginning of being known.
Before a child knows what home means, they have already lived inside one.
And before they know the world, they know her voice.
A companion poem, First Home, is also available separately in the Words to Keep collection. Created to sit alongside the artwork, it carries the same story into words — the first home a child ever knows, and the quiet bond already forming between mother and baby before they meet.
A meaningful keepsake for an expectant mother, mum-to-be or couple awaiting their baby — for a pregnancy announcement, baby shower, Mother’s Day, birthday, or simply to remember those months when two people were already getting to know one another in a way no one else could quite hear.
PRODUCT DETAILS
A digital Fine Art Literary Keepsake by Surreal Mindscapes, created through a mixed-media-inspired approach combining painterly imagery, graphite-inspired drawing, expressive texture and restrained typography within one carefully balanced composition.
Printed as a museum-quality Giclée Fine Art print on Hahnemühle German Etching 310 gsm — a beautifully textured, heavyweight archival paper chosen to complement the softness of the fabric, graphite-inspired detail and tactile painterly character of the artwork.
COLOURWAY
This piece is created in a soft, intimate palette of warm ivory, natural linen, pale stone, gentle taupe, charcoal graphite and restrained antique gold, with natural skin tones bringing warmth to the centre of the composition.
The predominantly neutral colourway keeps the piece calm and timeless, while small areas of darker graphite and muted gold add depth without taking attention away from the mother, her belly and the open book.
AVAILABLE FORMATS
STUDIO — 21 × 30 cm
A smaller, intimate format with a clean-cut edge. The composition and typography are carefully adjusted to preserve the quiet balance between the figure, book and surrounding negative space.
SIGNATURE — 30 × 40 cm
The artwork at its intended scale, with a clean-cut edge, allowing the painterly surface, graphite-inspired detail and quiet emotional presence of the composition to be appreciated more fully.
Small differences in typography, spacing or placement may appear between formats, as each version is composed specifically for its proportions.
The visible paper texture, graphite-inspired marks, unfinished edges and broad areas of apparent impasto are intentional parts of the artwork. The sculptural paint effects and subtle gold details are reproduced within the printed image; the finished Giclée print itself remains flat.
COMPANION POEM
A coordinating companion poem, When I Look Down, is available separately from the Words to Keep collection.
The poem explores the same story through words — the mother's body as the first home her child will ever know, and the remarkable familiarity that begins before birth through warmth, closeness, rhythm and the sound of her voice.
Both pieces were conceived as companions and can be displayed individually or together as a coordinated two-piece keepsake set — one holding the moment in an image, the other in words.
PERSONALISATION
A name, expected arrival date, birth date or short dedication may be added in a subtle handwritten style, thoughtfully placed to complement the original composition.
Personalisation can be kept very simple, allowing the artwork itself to remain the focus.
UNFRAMED
The print is supplied unframed. Any frames or styled settings shown in product images are for presentation only.
Colours and subtle tonal details may vary slightly between your screen and the finished Fine Art print.
