IT’S RAINING AUTUMN
It’s Raining Autumn begins with a slightly impossible idea: what if autumn did not simply arrive, but actually fell from the sky?
Leaves pour down like rain, striking the enormous black umbrella, catching on its surface and gathering around the solitary figure below. There is no tree above and no visible source. Autumn itself appears to be falling.
The exaggerated scale of the umbrella turns an ordinary rainy-day gesture into something quietly surreal. The figure stands beneath it as though sheltering not simply from the weather, but from the entire season descending around them.
The umbrella offers protection — although perhaps not quite enough. After all, no one seems to make it through autumn entirely untouched by it.
Above, ochre, burnt orange, tobacco brown and muted gold gather in broad, sculptural passages of apparent impasto before breaking apart into individual leaves, splashes and fragments. Below, the same colours collect across the wet ground, visually connecting what is falling with what has already landed.
Against this movement, the figure remains remarkably still. Turned away from the viewer and almost swallowed by the enormous umbrella, there is no particular story attached to them. They could be anyone who has ever stepped outside prepared for rain and discovered that the season had other plans.
Generous areas of warm-ivory negative space allow the composition to breathe, while graphite-inspired marks, scratches and unfinished passages prevent the scene from resolving into conventional landscape.
It’s Raining Autumn is a playful but restrained interpretation of an autumn day — part weather, part season, and just a little bit impossible.
