POPPY OF SILENCE
Some memories need no words.
Some acts of remembrance are public.
Others happen quietly, at home.
Poppy of Silence brings those two worlds together.
Beyond the window, a remembrance procession gathers beneath the Union Jack. Figures in uniform stand together, continuing a tradition of honouring those who served and sacrificed.
Inside, everything is still.
A vase of red poppies rests on a wooden table, beside a medal and its ribbon. Small objects, perhaps, but capable of holding stories far greater than themselves.
For some, remembrance is about history. For others, it is deeply personal — a grandfather's stories, a photograph kept in a drawer, a name spoken every November, or someone who never came home.
And sometimes it is simply about recognising that the peaceful, ordinary lives we enjoy today came at a cost.
The vivid poppies, weathered interior and distant figures emerge through expressive painterly passages, graphite-inspired marks and softly dissolving architectural detail. The contrast between the quiet room and the gathering outside allows both forms of remembrance to exist together.
The handwritten date, 11th November 1918, recalls the Armistice and the history behind this continuing tradition.
Because remembrance does not belong only to ceremonies, monuments or a single day in November.
It also belongs to the stories we carry.
To the lives we are able to live because of those who came before us.
And to the quiet moments when we remember them.
