SMOKING.

She is smoking.

Technically, that explains the title.

Everything else is open to interpretation.

Smoking. captures an intimate moment between two people who appear entirely comfortable with an arrangement we know absolutely nothing about.

She stands composed and self-assured, cigarette in hand, while he sits below her, his attention entirely elsewhere. His gesture is tender rather than theatrical; hers is calm enough to suggest that none of this is particularly unusual to either of them.

There is affection here, perhaps devotion, and certainly a sense that the balance between them has been established long before we arrived.

The composition moves between selective realism, broad painterly passages and loose graphite-inspired marks. Deep black clothing anchors the figures while warm skin tones, muted gold and generous ivory space keep the scene restrained rather than overtly dramatic.

Who holds the power is perhaps less obvious than it first appears.

Then again, perhaps we are overthinking it.
