Some Things Stay With Us Quietly is about the things we carry with us without always realising we are carrying them.

Most of us can remember something surprisingly small from years ago. A sentence someone once said. A particular look. The way a person made us feel safe, understood or brave enough to try. At the time, it may not have seemed important at all.

Only later do we sometimes recognise what stayed.

This piece was created around that idea — that the people who shape us do not always do so through grand gestures. Often it happens quietly, in ordinary moments that become part of how we understand ourselves and the world around us.

The coastal landscape gives those thoughts somewhere to breathe. The shoreline stretches into the distance while areas of graphite, soft painterly colour and broad impasto gradually dissolve into warm ivory paper. Nothing in the scene demands attention; it has the stillness of somewhere you might find yourself thinking about things you haven't thought about for years.

And perhaps that is why the piece feels particularly suited to someone who has been part of our story for a long time — a father, mother, grandparent, partner, friend or another person whose influence can still be found in small parts of who we have become.
