THE BEGINNING BEFORE US

The Beginning Before Us explores the quiet connection between generations — and the beautiful realisation that we belong to stories that began long before us.

At its centre is a simple meeting of two hands: one marked by time, the other still at the beginning of life. They rest together at an old wooden table, turning an ordinary moment into something that feels almost timeless. The figures themselves are left unseen; the relationship is carried entirely through touch, scale and proximity.

The composition moves gently between presence and memory. Warm ivory space surrounds areas of expressive graphite and restrained painterly colour, while broad passages of tactile impasto gather around the table and hands. Parts of the scene remain deliberately unresolved, allowing the image to feel less like a recorded moment and more like something remembered.

Rather than portraying grandparents through sentiment or nostalgia, the artwork considers their unique place within a family — as the keepers of stories, memories and small pieces of family history that might otherwise be lost.
