WHEN THE DAY BEGINS TO FADE — DIPTYCH
When the Day Begins to Fade is about the small lives carrying on around us when we are not really looking.
There is a particular feeling to a woodland towards the end of an autumn day. The light begins to disappear between the trees, leaves move beneath your feet, and suddenly the places that seemed empty a few hours earlier begin to have visitors of their own.
Sometimes, if we are lucky, our paths cross.
A hedgehog rustles beneath the leaves. A tiny nose appears somewhere it was not a moment ago. And for some reason, most of us stop.
Not because anything extraordinary has happened.
Simply because for a few seconds we have been allowed to notice another little life going about its evening.
That quiet encounter sits at the heart of this two-piece work.
In Part I, the poem begins beneath an old autumn tree and imagines the places a small woodland visitor might discover as the day fades — a hollow beneath the roots, a sheltered corner under the leaves, perhaps even an old pumpkin abandoned on the forest floor.
Somewhere warm enough. Dry enough. Safe enough to stay for a while.
But the woodland belongs to more than one visitor.
Part II takes us a little further into the story. One hedgehog has already discovered the pumpkin and settled inside. Another appears through the leaves.
And that is where we leave them.
Perhaps they will share it. Perhaps one will decide this particular piece of woodland is already occupied. Perhaps by morning both will have wandered somewhere entirely different.
We do not really need to know.
There is something lovely about encountering a wild animal and allowing its life to remain its own — being delighted that our paths crossed, wishing it well, and continuing on our way.
Visually, the diptych moves between observational woodland realism and more expressive Fine Art passages. Autumn leaves, moss, bark and the weathered pumpkin emerge through earthy painterly colour, while areas of graphite-inspired drawing and unresolved warm-ivory paper allow parts of the woodland to disappear almost as quickly as they appear.
Broad sculptural-looking paint passages bring weight to the old tree, forest floor and pumpkin without turning the scene into a conventional wildlife illustration. The two hedgehogs remain small within their environment — visitors rather than characters performing for the viewer.
When the Day Begins to Fade is ultimately about noticing.
The rustle beneath the leaves.
The little nose we nearly walked past.
The tiny wild life that happened to cross ours for a moment.
And perhaps remembering that some stories are better when we don't follow them all the way to the end.
PRODUCT DETAILS
A digital Fine Art Literary Keepsake Diptych by Surreal Mindscapes, created through a mixed-media-inspired approach combining original poetry, painterly imagery, graphite-inspired drawing, expressive texture and restrained typography across two coordinating artworks.
The diptych consists of:
PART I — WHEN THE DAY BEGINS TO FADE
The literary piece, combining the original poem with an expressive autumn woodland composition.
PART II — WHEN THE DAY BEGINS TO FADE
The coordinating Fine Art piece, continuing the woodland story through the quiet encounter between two hedgehogs and an abandoned autumn pumpkin.
The two works were conceived together and can be displayed side by side as a complete diptych, while each composition retains enough visual space and identity to stand independently.
Printed as museum-quality Giclée Fine Art prints on Hahnemühle German Etching 310 gsm — a beautifully textured, heavyweight archival paper chosen to complement the woodland palette, graphite-inspired marks and tactile character of the painterly surfaces.
COLOURWAY
The diptych is created in a rich, natural autumn palette of warm ivory, weathered bark brown, raw umber, charcoal, moss green, burnt orange, ochre and muted antique gold.
Part I is quieter and more spacious, with the dark weight of the old tree balanced by a large area of warm-ivory paper surrounding the poem.
Part II moves further into the woodland, introducing deeper moss greens, damp earth, fallen leaves and the burnt-orange pumpkin while retaining the same charcoal, ivory and muted-gold language.
Together, the two pieces feel connected without becoming identical.
AVAILABLE FORMATS
STUDIO — 2 × 21 × 30 cm
A smaller, intimate presentation of the complete diptych. The composition and typography of each piece are carefully adjusted to preserve their relationship when displayed together.
SIGNATURE — 2 × 30 × 40 cm
The diptych at its intended scale, with clean-cut edges, allowing the painterly surfaces, graphite-inspired detail and quiet narrative presence of both compositions to be appreciated more fully.
As a complete two-piece work, the diptych includes a 10% saving compared with two individual Fine Art prints.
Small differences in typography, spacing or placement may appear between formats, as each version is composed specifically for its proportions.
The visible paper texture, graphite-inspired marks, unresolved passages, broad apparent impasto and irregular painterly edges are intentional parts of the artworks. The sculptural paint effects and subtle metallic-looking details are reproduced within the printed images; the finished Giclée prints themselves remain flat.
DISPLAY
The two works are designed to sit naturally together as a coordinated Fine Art diptych.
They may be displayed side by side with a small space between the frames, allowing the quieter literary composition of Part I to lead naturally into the fuller woodland environment of Part II.
They can also be displayed separately while remaining recognisable as parts of the same visual story.
PERSONALISATION
A name, date or short dedication may be added subtly to the literary piece in a handwritten style, thoughtfully placed so that it becomes part of the composition rather than competing with the poem.
Personalisation can be kept very simple, allowing the woodland and its story to remain the focus.
UNFRAMED
The prints are supplied unframed. Any frames or styled settings shown in product images are for presentation only.
Colours and subtle tonal details may vary slightly between your screen and the finished Fine Art prints.
