There are moments when leaving begins before we move.
A pause at the doorway.
A last look towards the place we know.
A few seconds in which everything familiar suddenly feels worth noticing.
Before I Stepped Out captures that quiet threshold between staying and going.
The woman stands half within the shelter of the doorway and half turned towards the landscape beyond it. The town, water and distant hills remain softly resolved, while the foreground becomes increasingly fragmented through graphite-inspired marks and broad painterly passages.
Nothing dramatic is happening.
And that is precisely why the moment feels so familiar.
Sometimes change arrives quietly. There is no announcement, no grand farewell, no certainty about what comes next. We simply reach a point where we know we are about to move forward — and instinctively turn back once more towards what has held us until now.
Created for those who recognise the strange tenderness of beginnings that also contain an ending — moving home, leaving somewhere loved, starting again, or simply knowing that a chapter is beginning to close.
