FIRST BENEATH MY HEART

First Beneath My Heart is about that brief and extraordinary time when two people are already becoming parents — but only one of them can carry their child.

For a mother, the baby is never very far away. She feels the movements no one else notices, wakes with them, carries them through ordinary days and gradually learns the small rhythms of someone she has not yet met.

For the other parent, that closeness has to happen differently.

A hand placed on her belly becomes a way of reaching towards the baby. Sometimes there is a kick in response. Sometimes nothing happens at all. And sometimes both simply wait, hands resting together, knowing that for now this is as close as they can all be.

That is the moment held in First Beneath My Heart.

The mother’s hands rest protectively above her belly while her partner’s hands cradle it from below. There is no need to see their faces. The way their hands meet around the child already tells us what is happening between them.

For these few months, their experiences of parenthood are different. She carries the baby beneath her heart. Her partner waits for the day when the same child can finally be held within their arms.

And somewhere between those two kinds of closeness, a family has already begun.

The artwork keeps the figures soft and partially unresolved, allowing natural skin tones and pale fabric to move into graphite-inspired marks, warm ivory paper and broad painterly passages of stone, charcoal and muted gold. Rather than becoming a formal pregnancy portrait, the composition remains focused on the simple gesture at its centre.
